Several men attempt to hold up a bank in the Farraday university building but don't count on the squad being there thanks to a tip off. The driver is arrested immediately, three leave the bank and one is shot after shooting a police officer, the other two are captured. This leaves two in the bank, Terry Wands and Barry Monk, with three hostages. The squad surrounds the university and Jack orders two marksmen and a photographer to stand by. Mrs. Dowland, the bank managers wife, arrives in a distressed state wanting to how her husband is. Jack demands that the blaggers show him that the hostages are alright or he'll come in shooting. As they emerge their photo's are taken in order to identify them. Gough from the Evening Herald arrives hoping to get a story. He gets Mrs. Dowland's address from one of the bank employees. One of the hostages, Julia Coulson, is sent out at gunpoint to ask for some food. George gets ready to take the food in and the two marksmen are told to prepare to shoot if they both get a clear view should George give the signal, but there isn't. Once inside they give him an envelope to give to Jack. They want a car and to be allowed to leave with the hostages and the money. Haskins arrives and although both marksmen have a perfect clear view of Wands and Monk he refuses the order to shoot. Gough arrives at Mrs. Dowland's for an interview. He persuades her to call her husband on his private line which is turned into a live broadcast with Monk. A car is placed outside, heavily laden with homing devices, and Dowland, the bank manager, and Julia are ushered in. A few hundred yards down the road they spot two officers in an unmarked police car which they commandeer at gunpoint. They put on the jackets and hats and drive away in the car. This allows them to drive straight through a road block and on to the M4. Dowland is trying to cut the rope his hands are tied with a piece of broken glass. C11 informs Jack that Wands' uncle has a place in Slough and this must be the place they're heading for. On arriving to pick up a second car and a set of plane tickets Dowland tries to escape and in the struggle Wands is shot and Monk clubs Dowland to death with the butt of the gun. When Haskins arrives Jack tells him he should have given the order to shoot them in the bank and none of this would have happened. |
