Jack and George are driving along when they spot Billy Medhurst entering a chip shop. They want him in connection with a shooting in which a policeman was shot and. permanently disabled. As he leaves he sees Jack talking to his wife in the car and. runs the other way. They pursue him and. eventually catch him.
Meanwhile Sheila, his wife, has contacted their brief Mr Ashby - Jones. He joins Haskins at the local nick for the identification parade. The crippled Eddie Jackson has been brought in to identify Medhurst - which he does.
Jack and George visit Sheila to try and persuade her to get her husband to tell her who else was involved in the shooting.
Haskins tells Ashby - Jones that they will be lenient with his client if he tells them who the other gang members were especially who pulled the trigger.
Jack and George are escorting Medhurst to the trial when the prison van is ambushed. The rear doors are pulled off. Medhurst is bundled into a car seemingly against his will. They return to Sheila's but she seems genuinely not to know anything about the abduction. The only other person who had access to Medhurst was Ashby - Jones.
Jack visits Eddie Jackson at home to find out who informed on the gang originally some two years previously. The man's name is Mason who on questioning reckons that Medhurst was sprung to be killed so that he couldn't inform on the rest of the gang.
A headless corpse is found in the Thames and Sheila is called in to the morgue to identify it. She say's it's her husband.
It's now Saturday and Jack and George are planning to go and watch Fulham play at home. Meanwhile Medhurst is alive and well and at a frozen meat depot planning to blag it. He coshes the security guard and tie him up. They then load up £20,000 of prime scotch fillet steak into an empty lorry.
Ashby - Jones, who is acting as a middle man for his wholesale butcher brother -in -law, is informed of a delay. Back at the depot the ether villains find their van won't start so they have to travel in the back of the refrigerated lorry. As Medhurst arrives at his destination the security guard is found. He rings Ashby - Jones and. is informed of the delay.
Jack and George arrive at the depot not too happy about being dragged away from the match. They realise it must have been Medhurst as a new employee had been taking time off work at exactly the same times that Medhurst was in custody.
They visit Sheila and find two plane tickets to Jersey. She tells them that the body had been dug up from a grave before being dumped in the Thames and that Ashby - Jones needed the money to pay off some heavy gambling debts.
At Wandsworth lorry park Ashby - Jones meets Medhurst as planned but the Sweeney is there and after the lorry is opened to find two very cold villains, Medhurst gives them the slip and, jumping from a high wall, breaks his legs.
