Old man Turner is upstairs in his fiat above his shop when he hears a noise downstairs. He goes to investigate but is attacked. Later that morning DS Cree and DC Feast visit the home of Davey Holmes. They ask him where he was last night as they have a witness who says he was seen leaving the building. He admits to having taken out a loan but Turner was OK when he left. When they find £500 strapped under Davey's bike they think Turner refused and Davey hit him and stole the money. They caution him and escort him to their car but he does a runner and escapes.

The door bell wakes Jack from his slumbers. It's May, Davey's mother. She is an old friend of Jack's. He tells her to return home and wait for him to call her with any news he may find.

Jack goes to the speedway track that Davey frequented and asks his friend, Don Edwards, if he has seen Davey but he says he hasn't.

George follows Don from the track and follows him to a deserted block of flats where he meets up with Jack. They enter the flat and confront Davey. When Jack asks him what the £500 was for he says it was for an abortion for a girlfriend. He tries to escape but George is in the hall and he is taken into custody.

Jack and George are in the interview room when Cree and Feast burst into the room demanding that Davey be left to them.

Jack and George search Davey's room and find a keg and a tag ;16a. George tracks down the key cutter and is told that they were cut for an estate agent's by the name of Ashcroft and Phillips. They speak to a Mr Ashcroft and on showing him the key he says they sold the property in Freeman Place a year earlier. He asks their Mr Jessop to bring in the file on the property. Jack goes to the flat where he meets up with George. Unbeknown to them Mr Jessop has followed George and is watching from his car.

When they return to the station where Davey was being held they are told that the old man had regained consciousness and cleared Davey and he had been released an hour earlier.

Davey meets Sheila, his girlfriend, in the woods and tells her that Jessop had seen them leaving the flat and was blackmailing him to keep him from getting word to Sheila's husband in jail as he would have had them both killed. He then leaves to pay off Jessop with the £500. As Sheila leaves the woods she is stopped by one of her husband's men and is driven off.

Jack goes to see Sheila but a neighbour tells him that she left with a suitcase and a man earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, Davey enters the flat for the pay off but is met by the man who picked up Sheila. He tries to run but is stopped by another heavy.

Jack and George return to May's. The doorbell rings and May rushes to the door. It's Davey alright but he has been beaten unconscious. George runs into the street but there's no one there.
