Tim Cook is being transferred from a hospital under police guard. They enter a lift with two men looking like surgeons. Once the doors are closed the police guard is jumped and Cook's handcuffs are cut with bolt croppers.

Jack is enjoying his leave in Suffolk with his girlfriend Pat and when George arrives to tell him about the disappearance of Cook he leaves immediately much to the annoyance of Pat.

Cook is staying with his friend, Pinder, at his uncle's sisters house. On leaving he steals a pint of milk and a jacket from a milk float and is spotted by a neighbour, Mrs. Haldane. She recognises Cook from the papers and calls the police.

Cook has gone to a forest where he climbs a tree and throws down a haversack ,which, on opening, contains silver ornaments and wads of pound notes. He then proceeds to a cricket pavilion and on finding the key above the door he enters.

When the fingerprints are checked in the house, both Pinder's and Cook's are found. It transpires that Pinder is only on day and weekend release from Pentonville jail. Jack and George visit the governor to find out where he was that weekend.

Pinder goes to the pavilion to tell Cook that he's persuaded his uncle to allow him to stay at their house for a few days

Cook's prison uniform is found on the overnight ferry to Cherbourg but Jack is convinced that Cook didn't leave it there.

George goes to see Pinder at work and Jack to Pinder's uncle, an ex JP, Mr. Woodhouse. Later that day Woodhouse tells Cook to leave as the Sweeney are closing in when he refuses Cooks demand for money he is thrown downstairs out of a window.

After visiting Woodhouse at the hospital, Jack goes to the pavilion to meet George and Haskins. Haskins tells them to mount a 24 hour surveillance as he's sure Cook will come back for a knife he left there.

In the forest Cook and Pinder hide their Jeep in the bushes but Pinder is feeling unwell.

When George tells Jack of a break in at a manor house where a 12 bore and some cartridges were stolen he knows it's Cook and this gives him an idea of the whereabouts of Cook.

Back in the forest 2 boys are showing a police man the Jeep they found whilst playing. Cook carries the ill Pinder to the road where he stops a motorist and demands that he takes his friend to the hospital.

Jack, George and a number of local police with dogs go to where the motorist was stopped and begin searching the forest. Cook overpowers four of them including George and then tries to strangle Jack with a leather belt. Jack throws him and as he picks up a shotgun and aims it at him, George appears and pumps 3 rounds into Cook.

Jack returns to Suffolk to enjoy the rest of his leave with Pat in peace.
