Leonard Gold is holding a party after being knighted for services to industry. A man drives up to Gold's house where photographs are taken of him entering. He knocks at the door and gives an envelope to the housekeeper to give to Gold. On opening it he sees a photograph of several dead bodies and himself stood over them in military uniform. He goes into the library to confront the man, one Harry Collins, who tells him that his brother had been stationed with Gold's unit in Malaya in 1955 as a clerk. He says his brother has just died and left full details of an incident which happened there in which many civilians were murdered and threatens to make the details public if Gold doesn't give him £50,000. At the yard Jack opens a file containing the photographs whilst Gold rings his friend and ex commander, Major Masterson, and asks him to come round to his house immediately. Once there he tells Masterson that as he set him up in his security firm that he owes him and must deal with Collins. Masterson recruits two ex-mercenaries, Wade and Logan, who used to be in the same unit as him to deal with Collins. Collins visits Gold again and is told that he wants more proof. Collins tells him that he'll show him a couple of pages of the official transcript of the enquiry. Masterson is listening in the next room. Collins leaves with Jack and George and Wade and Logan following and goes to a solicitors. In there he asks for a letter of introduction in the hope that they will give him the keys to his brother's safe deposit box, but Pierce says he will have to be present when the box is opened. Collins goes to see Leroy Garner, a photographer, who is in on the scam with Collins and as Collins breathing down his neck when he opens the box Leroy says he will forge a letter of introduction. Wade rings Masterson and says they can't get near Collins because the police are following. Masterson asks for the registration number and says he'll look into it. He then asks his secretary to get him Chief Supt. Alan Grey of Special Branch. Grey was in the also in the same unit and they later meet in a church. Masterson says that Grey's career would suffer it this got out so he tells him to do something about it. As Jack and George are recalled back to the factory to be told to leave Collins alone. Collins is stood outside the National Anglian Bank waiting for Leroy who gives him a microfilm camera. Using the forged letter he is allowed to see the safe deposit box and takes pictures of the document. Wade follows Leroy on foot. Jack disregards Grey's order to leave Collins alone and tells George to visit Gold and the solicitors. Later Wade and Logan enter Leroy's studio and steal the developed microfilmed pictures and other equipment to make it look more like a simple burglary. Leroy surprises them and is beaten up. On seeing a report of the attack Jack and George visit Leroy. As they leave Collins arrives and now he knows the Sweeney are on the case and the photographs were stolen he bottles out and leaves for Brighton, followed by Wade and Logan, to lay low. Meanwhile Grey, Masterson and Gold meet and says he wants the actual transcript so he can destroy it himself as they now know where the box is they just have to get Collins to collect the box and Masterson's men will collect Collins. Masterson decides it will be better if he, Wade and Logan blast their way into the bank and steal the transcript. This they do later that night but on leaving Wade breaks his foot jumping over a wall. The police arrive and are met by automatic gunfire as Wade holds them off while the others escape. When Jack hears about the raid he goes to the local nick where Wade is being kept and is told that the box broken into was owned by the late Philip Collins and they knew that Pierce had told George that Collins had been at the solicitors regarding his dead brothers estate they now have a connection. Jack and George go to the solicitors where they inform Pierce that Collins's letter of introduction had been a forgery. They then visit Leroy and when they threaten to arrest him he tell them he remembers the name Leonard Gold and that it was a regimental enquiry. Grey, Masterson, Logan and Gold meet and Masterson has turned the tables on Gold and wants £500,000 from Gold to turn over the transcript. Jack gets a copy of the transcript from the military police and takes it to DCI Anderson. Grey decides to come clean and reveal all as he doesn't want to be in Masterson's pocket. He tells Jack that in 50 minutes time at 8.00 pm Gold will hand over the money to Masterson. Masterson and Logan arrive and as they are being arrested by Jack they hear a single shot ring out. They rush into the house to find Gold laying dead beside a case containing the money. Copyright © 1998-2005 J D Hunter. All rights reserved. Page last updated : October 25, 2000 |
